From Old Ways to New Hands
Sat 18 Aug, 10am - 5pm, 8 Castle St, Huntly
A basket weaving workshop
Karen Collins (Naturally Useful) will be leading a workshop on making a willow gathering frame basket.
Since the introduction of plastic in the 1950s and changing methods of storage in industry, agriculture and domestic life, baskets have shifted out of focus in our daily lives. But until these recent changes baskets were an everyday life essential throughout the centuries. In fact basketry is believed to be the oldest craft in the world, predating pottery.
While learning how to make a willow gathering frame basket, we will explore other aspects of basket making, such as the link between practice and memory, basketry and storytelling, weaving and community. How could these practices and their benefits be involved in our current lives that are already so busy?
