The Missing Picture, 2003
Orb’s Bookshop, 33A Deveron St
Pencil on paperDanish artist Eva Merz was invited to Huntly in 2003, looking at the effect global commerce has on family businesses. She surveyed the Huntly's local empty shops, renting one herself and turning it into an open studio. Her final project focused on the empty shop in Huntly, R Gauld & Sons, which was an active grocers from the 1920s until the mid-1980s. Eva preserved this premises, declared it as a Modern Monument and created tourist merchandise which was installed in the Brander Museum.
This piece, on display amongst the bookshelves at Orb's Bookshop, is a delicate and curious pencil drawing of a piece of wallpaper, with a lighter central area that suggests there was one a picture.
