J & J Watt Garage, 81 Gordon StPainted toy cars
German artist Jelka Plate joined us in 2003, looking at youth isolation and boredom in the rural environment. She engaged with a group of young people who customise their cars and drive for hundreds of miles around the town over evenings and weekends
Plate set up a drive-in cinema in the car park, which was attended by all generations, as well as car lovers and haters, giving them an opportunity to discuss, debate, and maybe reconcile. These toy cars, on display at the local garage, act as a small reminder to this project.
